Secure websites and subdomains with SSL for free

Encryption with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a central element of Internet security. This applies where personal data such as passwords, payment and contact information or internal company information is transmitted in particular. Therefore 1&1 now offers a free SSL wildcard certificate with every hosting package, with which website operators can protect a domain including all subdomains.

Simplified security

With 1&1, users have been able to encrypt data transmission over the Internet with a DV (Domain Validated) SSL certificate free of charge since 2016. 1&1 has now gone one step further and offers one DV Wildcard certificate per customer contract for free in all packages provided: Wildcard means that a certificate protects the main domain and an unlimited number of subdomains. Website operators have the possibility to secure several website areas such as a content area, a shop and a help area (e.g.: blog.mywebsite.co.uk, shop.mywebsite.co.uk and help.mywebsite.co.uk) at once, which also considerably simplifies HTTPS provisioning.

Make a mark with SSL

An SSL-encrypted website is identified by HTTPS and a green lock symbol in the web browser, a clear sign of security and trust. It shows website visitors that confidentiality, data integrity and authenticity play an important role for the web operator. For search engines like Google, SSL is also a positive feature and leads to better ranking of websites and shops in search results. In addition, 1&1 has developed a new SSL infrastructure that guarantees fast domain validation within minutes and installation on the web space. It also blocks DDoS attacks in all data traffic.

As of now and with only one click, all customers of 1&1 MyWebsite, WordPress Hosting by 1&1, 1&1 E-Shops, 1&1 Cloud Server, Virtual Server, Dedicated Server and all web hosting packages and domains can activate the certificate free of charge in their user interface. For root servers, users install it themselves.

The free SSL Wildcard is provided in partnership with Digicert, the world’s largest certificate issuer and Internet security expert. In addition, 1&1 offers additional SSL certificates for a fee. They differ in their additional level of security, validation and specific application area (websites, blogs, companies, organisations and online shops): https://www.1and1.co.uk/ssl-certificate
